The essential question for me is "How can technology be leveraged to increase equitable access to education while preparing students for citizenship in a global society?"
My rationale for pursuing this question is multilayered. The world is transforming at an exponential rate into a global society. No longer can we focus only on what is happening in our most immediate environment; actions and decisions made in one part of the world will have some level of impact on every other part of the globe. Our students must be prepared to live in this interconnected, intercultural society if they are to be successful global citizens. This preparation becomes part of our mission as educators.
Additionally, I consider it a personal responsibility to do all I can to assure that all students have equitable access to education. We currently suffer from what is termed an achievement gap in which students who are disadvantaged by various circumstances are not achieving at their potential. Creating ways to help these students succeed also helps our nation succeed. We need the brightest and best from every societal group, not just from the homes of privilege.
Technology can assist in meeting both of these goals, plus familiarity with current and future technologies will be essential for the success of the students of today. They will need to have the skills to learn and utilize new technologies as they emerge, and educators can help the students develop these skills.
In my work at NC State, I have found that technology is certainly a motivating tool for students. Additionally, it opens up possibilities for collaboration in ways that are not possible when one is restricted to a brick and mortar classroom. Students are able to collaborate and learn with those in other schools, cities, states, or even countries. As they become familiar with people from other cultures, they become more accepting of differences in others, and more willing to engage with those who may be unlike themselves. What I want to discover moving forward, is how this technology can be used in the service of providing equitable access to educational opportunities.
