On the path
ECI 541: Reading in the Content Areas, my third online course, pushed me even further into the digital world. In 541 I designed my first web quest, a math exploration for advanced first graders.
It was for Dr. Honeycutt that I also wrote my first position paper, championing acceleration as an option for advanced learners. At this point I was still focused on gifted learners and finding ways to combat how their learning needs were ignored during the years of NCLB. With ECI 550: Foundations of Middle Years Education, I had my first face-to-face, on-campus course. In this class, I became increasingly aware of the need to help students prepare for global citizenship. I also fell completely in love with Animoto when I use it to create my Cemetery Study presentation for Dr. Candy Beal. If I felt any uncertainty about the need to develop global citizens before taking ECI 524: Theory and Research of Global Learning, I had no doubts about it by the end of the course. I wrote about the challenges of globalization, and once again returned to the need of developing critical thinking skills. It was also this class that pushed me to participate in my first global project, March Around the World. This is a project hosted on the iEarn website and it was created by and is administered by a teacher in Australia. This project got my students excited about learning about other cultures. While ECI 524 heightened my awareness of the need for global education, ECI 511: Computer Applications and Curriculum Integration immersed me in technological applications that could assist in preparing students for the technological skills necessary for global citizenship. Dr. Kevin Oliver pushed us to develop projects that integrated a variety of Web applications. I focused my work around Latino themes for two reasons. First of all, making sure Latino/a students get fair and equitable treatment in the schools is one of my passions. Secondly, I teach a unit on Ancient Civilizations of Mexico and one of the projects became a nice accompaniment to that unit of study. |
