Nearing the end of this road
Finally, I come to my last year in the NLGL program. Changes put in place by the state legislature compelled me to put my program schedule into overdrive in order to complete the master's degree by the assigned date. This resulted in my having to double up on courses, and it seems that this past year just flew by.
I ventured over into the English department in order to satisfy those requirements, where I took ENG 511: Theory and Research in Composition and ENG 525: Variety in Language. The linguistics course was an eye-opener for me, awakening an awareness of dialect prejudice and the sorts of impacts this can have on a student in the educational system. I stuck to my interests in educational inequities and Latino students even here, by choosing to prepare and present on Carmen Fought's work on Chicano English. In this, my last semester of my master's program, I of course took ECI 508: Teachers as Leaders, which I credit with reviving my interest in taking on a leadership role at my school. One of our assignments was to review a film showing teacher leadership in action, and to present this review to the class. Here again, I found a way to discuss educational inequities and the Latino student by reviewing the film Stand and Deliver. |
